Wings of KKB 2020

The Wings of KKB 2020 has been postponed or cancelled due to the Covid-19 or Coronavirus pandemic that has put Malaysia in a Movement Control Order (MCO) from March to 12th May.

This also means that all Malaysian bird watching festivals and events have been cancelled this year as instructed by the Malaysian government and Tourism Malaysia.

Wings of KKB

This event also goes by other names such as the Selangor International Bird Race, Pesta Sayap KKB, translated from the Malay language and the Selangor International Birds Fair.

First of all, I think it isn’t obvious to have multiple names for just one event and right now, it is still called all three until the organizers decide on just one name. This bird watching event and festival has been around for several years and has been organized by Tourism Selangor and the district council of Hulu Selangor.

The objective of having it as an international bird race was supposed to attract foreign visitors to participate. However, over the years, international marketing for this event did not do well. A quick strategy was created to keep the number of visitors and participants up and invite the local schools to participate as quick fixes.

Now the Wings of KKB draws roughly around a thousand participants or less visitors to their yearly event, which is held in two locations – One at the Selangor Heritage Park and the other at the town of Kuala Kubu Bharu.

Several years ago, the event was finished at a third location called Awana Genting, but due to certain issues, some of the sponsors had stopped, and Awana Genting was removed from the venues.

If you look at the official poster below, you will also notice some grammar errors, which I believe was done in-house. I have to say this because if we want to look good outside of Malaysia, we need to fix these errors.

This means that apart from just having an event to reach the KPI, I would focus on re-branding this event into a proper one, starting with correct grammar, especially if you want to attract foreigners.

When are the next Wings of KKB event?

While the main website for this event states that it is postponed to a later date, but in reality, I think that the event would be just cancelled and done again next year for Wings of KKB 2021.

If the organizers decide on having this event later this year, there would definitely be fear of the public or participants attending this bird festival in Selangor.

Wings of KKB 2020

  • Date: 10 to 12 April 2020
  • Venue: Kuala Kubu Bharu & Selangor Heritage Park
  • Notice: Event Postponed due to Covid-19 Pandemic

Conclusion

I hope the organizers consider the crucial decision to let 2020 go by and have the Wings of KKB 2021 instead. This way, we can let nature enjoy having some peace and privacy for an entire year.

Till then, we all hope for the best for the following year in this event and hoping that more students will show interest in birds and nature by participating in the Wings of KKB festival in Selangor.
