As we near the end of the year, a big event will be held in the historic town of Taiping. The Taiping Bird Week 2024 will be held from 13th to 15th December 2024. This is also the fifth time the birding event has been held here. This year’s event is pretty special as it is held in conjunction with Visit Taiping Year 2024.
The Taiping Municipal Council is organizing the event in collaboration with several NGOs, namely the Natural Ecosystem Sustainability Organization (NEST) and the Wild Bird Club of Malaysia (WBCM).
Taiping Bird Week 2024
This birding event usually targets the general public and schools. The activities usually organized in previously held events included talks, programs, contests, and on-ground events. However, each year, the event has slowly adapted its programs to cater more to birders.
Interestingly, this year’s event will include even more birding category competitions up for grabs! Also, the Bird Photo Run being organized this time is a good addition to this year’s event. This is a good trend in birdwatching competitions in Malaysia, where photo evidence will help address integrity issues.
Taiping Bird Race 2024
Under the bird race, there will be two categories for everyone. The categories are:
1. Open Category – 3 Persons per team. The competition will take place from 11.00 A.M on 14th December (Saturday) till 11.00 A.M on 15th December (Sunday)
Participation fee for each team is RM 30.00
2. Secondary School Student Category – 3 Persons per team. The competition will take place from 8.00-11.30 A.M on 15th December (Sunday)
Participation fee for each team is RM 15.00

This edition of the Taiping Bird Week will feature a Taiping Bird Photo Run. In this category, participants who take photos of the largest number of bird species will be the competition winners. The competition will occur from 9.00 A.M on 13th December (Friday) till 10.30 A.M on 15th December (Sunday).
The photo race is an individual competition. The participating fee is RM 50.00 per person.

Beautiful Taiping Photography Contest 2024
Unlike previous editions, this year’s photography competition for Taiping Bird Week is not limited to bird photography but may include landscape and nature as part of the category. Participants can submit photos that capture the beauty of Taiping’s historical and natural heritage.
The photography competition is an individual competition. The participating fee is RM 50.00 per person.

Other Events Held During the Taiping Bird Week
If you are not interested in participating in the competitions but wish to attend the event and festivities, there are other events being held as part of Taiping Bird Week. These include bird photo exhibitions, exhibitions by various government agencies and nature-related organizations, public talks on birdwatching, and photography workshops.
If attending events is not your cup of tea, you can visit Taiping and do your own birdwatching there. Taiping is a great birdwatching location and offers many different types of bird species. Its many different habitats, including lowland and sub-montane rainforests, freshwater habitats, and mangrove forests, surround this rich and historical town.
How to Get to Taiping for the Taiping Bird Week 2024
It takes approximately 3 hours to travel to Taiping from Kuala Lumpur via the North-South Expressway. Do note that travel time may increase depending on traffic. Plenty of accommodations are available in Taiping, including hotels and homestays. However, it is suggested that you book your accommodation early to get ones that suit your budget and convenience.
