Good news for birdwatchers and photographers as the Perlis Bird Race 2024 is at the end of October 2024 at Wang Kelian. This is also known as the Northernmost Bird Race in Malaysia, at the smallest state bordering Thailand.
Perlis Bird Race
Like any other bird race, the main event is the 24-hour race in which teams of three compete to see who spots the most birds within that time. There will also be a bird photography contest, but not much is known now.
While it is pretty exciting to know that a bird race in Perlis has been scheduled, it would also be nice if the organisers continue focusing on the bird photo race, as this is currently one of the best formats to curb dishonesty within the gentlemen’s bird races.
For the record, this is not the first birding event in Perlis as there was the Wang Kelian Bird Race in October 2023, under the same organisers who ran that event as a test module before announcing this official event for 2024.
For the coming birding event in Perlis, there will be on-ground activities, booths showcasing various government departments, and maybe even some optic or camera brands at the event. And, of course, the official launching, speech and other formalities.
A bird clinic may also be part of the first day, while a special section is dedicated to raising schoolchildren’s awareness of birds and birdwatching. The flag-off event is also held on Saturday morning and will conclude by noon on Sunday.
Not much information was available when we wrote this article (19 June 2024), but we will provide more when it becomes available. So far, we know that this event is organized by NEST and the Wildlife Department of Perlis (Jabatan Perhutanan Perlis).
