The Borneo Bird Festival Contest will include several categories open to everyone. The primary contest is the Sabah Bird Race, which will occur at the event grounds for two days. Other contests, including photography and a bird photo race, followed by several other on-ground activities for adults and kids.
Borneo Bird Festival Contest
The Borneo Bird Festival holds a series of contests for local and international participants every year. Teams or individuals must register beforehand to participate. Therefore, we will share the restoration links below for your convenience in this article.
The birding contests occur around the BBF main venue, the Rainforest Discovery Centre in Sepilok, Sandakan. For first-timers, this will be an eye-opener due to the species of birds that can be found here.

Borneo Bird Race
The Sabah Bird Race team event is open for teams of three persons, and each team must race around Sepilok to spot the most birds in two days. A fee is required for the registration beforehand, and you can download the information below:
Borneo Bird Photo & Video Competition
One popular contest for bird photographers is the Bird Photography Contest. You can take photos within one year until the closing date, 21 October 2024. Each entry is for one photo or video only. If you are required to submit more than one, you need to pay for each entry.

Borneo Bird Photo Race
This contest is similar to the bird race, but the team needs to take photos of the birds they spot, and the judges require proof of that. The team with the most birds supported by identifiable photos will win.
Some birders think this would be a better format for the bird race as it provides solid proof of the bird sightings versus the conventional gentlemen’s method. Again, we hope the bird photo race will eventually replace the conventional one.

Conclusion
These are the three categories for the Borneo Bird Festival Contest that birders and photographers will be interested in. Of course, other contests are available for kids during the festival, and you can see them on the main activities page.
For more information, please contact the Borneo Bird Festival officials, who will get back to you soon. Other than that, we at Birdwatching Asia will be at the event, so see you there!
We live in Australia and will be attending the festival. We have our accomodation booked. I note on the event schedule it advises that to attend the guided birdwatching walk pre registration is required. Could you advise how we pre register. Thank you.
Hi there Glen!
If I remember correctly from the event last year, you simply register for the guided bird walks on the morning of the event days – first come, first serve basis. I will let you know if this has changed. In any case, birding around the Rainforest Discovery Centre is quite easy, even without a guide. On the event days, just follow the ones with the big cameras!
Thanks for visiting the website, and I hope you’ll have a great trip to Sabah and the bird festival!
