In 2023, I took a slow drive from Kota Kinabalu to do birdwatching at Kudat Tip of Borneo in Sabah. This is also one of the less visited places due to the long driving distance from KK city. However, since I was headed here for some work, why not do some birding, I thought.
Birdwatching at Kudat Tip of Borneo
For the record, the Tip of Borneo in Kudat is the northernmost point of Sabah and Borneo Island, making this one of the tourist destinations for anyone heading up north. While there are a lot of cultural experiences found in Kuday, birding is not one of the main activities, but you can find some decent birds around here.
For my journey, I drove to several villages and small towns before heading to the Tip of Borneo, where I did birdwatching for about an hour at the iconic landmark of Sabah. My bird list isn’t impressive, but I will share it with some bird photos.
You may notice I posted only some of the not-so-regular birds seen, as the common Eurasian Tree Sparrows, Myna’s, and Crows are not here. I believe most of you reading this would already know what those common birds look like.
Anyway, if you ever head to the north of Sabah for whatever reasons, do take some time to explore this part of North Borneo as it is pretty laid-back and natural, without the hustle and bustle of the fast-moving city life, like in Kota Kinabalu.
Kudat is still under the radar for birdwatching, but if there is something unique or rare, the Sabah birders would know about it, and you will see more information on this place. For now, it’s just another area in Sabah Borneo.

Conclusion
For anyone planning a trip to do Birdwatching at Kudat Tip of Borneo, note that you can easily do this for a few hours, mainly in the mornings and evenings. The journey here from Kota Kinabalu takes about four hours drive one way.
If you need to explore around here, I recommend you spend a night at either Mantanani Island if you plan to see the Mantanani Scops Owl or head straight to Kudat and stay there for one night.
