Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2026
High above the tropical lowlands of Pahang lies Fraser’s Hill, a misty mountain retreat famous among birdwatchers across Asia. Each year, this peaceful highland destination becomes the stage for one of Malaysia’s most celebrated nature events. The Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race 2026 is widely recognised as the oldest bird race in Malaysia and a cherished tradition that unites birdwatchers, photographers, researchers and nature lovers from around the world.
More than just a competition, the event is a vibrant celebration of Malaysia’s rich birdlife and the timeless charm of Fraser’s Hill. For decades, it has attracted keen observers armed with binoculars, field guides and cameras, all eager to discover the remarkable birds hidden within the hill’s lush forests.

A Historic Birding Event in Malaysia
The Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race began in 1988 and holds the distinction of being Malaysia’s first organised birdwatching competition. Over the years, it has grown into one of the most respected birding gatherings in Southeast Asia.
What started as a small meeting of bird enthusiasts has evolved into a major eco-tourism event supported by conservation groups and tourism authorities. The race also plays an important role in raising awareness about wildlife conservation while showcasing the incredible biodiversity of Malaysia’s forests.
Fraser’s Hill itself adds a special historical charm to the event. The area was originally developed as a British colonial hill station and has since been transformed into a tranquil resort town located about 1000 meters above sea level. The higher elevation creates a noticeably cooler climate compared to the surrounding lowlands. Misty forests, winding roads and colonial era buildings give the destination a nostalgic character that many visitors find enchanting.
The cool environment also makes birdwatching in Fraser’s Hill an ideal location. The montane rainforest surrounding the town supports a rich diversity of highland bird species. Malaysia itself is home to more than 830 bird species, making it among the most exciting birding destinations in Asia.
Fraser’s Hill alone hosts more than 250 species, including colourful sunbirds, laughingthrushes, barbets, woodpeckers and the beautiful Malayan Whistling Thrush. Birdwatchers often explore quiet forest trails and roadside viewpoints where the sounds of bird calls echo through the cool mountain air.

How the Bird Race Works
This unique race focuses on knowledge and observation rather than speed. Teams of birdwatchers explore the forests and roads around Fraser’s Hill with the aim of identifying as many bird species as possible within a fixed time period.
Teams normally consist of three members who combine their skills to detect birds through sight and sound. Some species are easy to see while others reveal their presence through distinctive calls echoing through the forest canopy.
Several competition categories allow both experienced birders and beginners to participate. Student teams and novice birdwatchers are encouraged to join, helping to inspire the next generation of nature enthusiasts.
Alongside the main competition, visitors can also enjoy activities such as bird photography contests, conservation talks and nature exhibitions. The atmosphere throughout the weekend is friendly and collaborative, with participants exchanging sightings and sharing stories from the trails.

Visit Malaysia 2026: A Perfect Time for Tropical Birding
The 2026 edition of the race arrives during an exciting time for tourism in the country. Malaysia is celebrating Visit Malaysia 2026, a national campaign that invites travellers to explore the country’s culture, wildlife and natural beauty.
For birdwatchers, this makes the Fraser’s Hill International Bird Race a wonderful opportunity to experience tropical birding in one of Southeast Asia’s most biodiverse regions. With more than 830 bird species recorded in Malaysia, birders have the chance to encounter a wide range of colourful and fascinating birds in forests, wetlands and mountain habitats.
Malaysia also offers one of the most convenient travel experiences for international birdwatchers. English is widely spoken and commonly used during birdwatching tours and guided nature excursions, making communication easy for visitors from around the world. Another highlight is Malaysia’s multicultural society. Malay, Chinese and Indian communities live side by side, creating a rich cultural tapestry reflected in daily life, traditions and festivals.
Food is another unforgettable part of the experience. Malaysia is renowned for its incredible culinary diversity. After a morning in the forest, birdwatchers can enjoy everything from fragrant Malay rice dishes and Chinese noodles to Indian curries and delicious local hawker food. Sharing a meal while discussing the day’s sightings is often one of the most enjoyable parts of a birding trip. Oh, there are also several English-style restaurants and a modern coffee corner available.

Hello Raul, can you let us know more details, and where to download the Fraser’s Hill Birds App? Thank you.
Hi what’s the difference between the option to select on the form (Bird Race & Bird Photo race)/ which is the best for the first timer. Thanks.
Hi Niven!
The “Bird Race” is where a team of three people try and spot as many bird species as they can in 24 hours. In the past years, there have always been a Novice category, and Advanced category. If you’re a beginner birdwatcher, you can join in the Novice category.
The “Bird Photo Race” is a photography contest. You are given 24 hours to get the best bird of Fraser’s Hill photo you can get.
Hope this helps!
Thank you !
