Low-cost carrier Batik Air has announced that they will open a new international route from Makassar, South Sulawesi (UPG), to Malaysia’s Kuala Lumpur via Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KUL). The service will be available on December 15, 2022.

This opens up opportunities for birdwatching in Sulawesi with the new direct flights. It also opens up other opportunities to connect with flights to other places in east Indonesia.

This opens up a whole new world of opportunities for birdwatching and general tourism, including adventure, scuba diving and cultural tourism, as South Sulawesi is one of the lesser-visited Indonesian destinations.

Conclusion

For more information, you can visit the official Batik Air website and make your bookings there once they open it up. Most passengers will be locals returning to Makassar, while there will be little tourism.

However, I speculate that there may be a rise in birdwatchers going to Sulawesi in 2023 as the trend is now picking up in Peninsular Malaysia. I, for one, would be interested in heading back to Makassar to do some birding there.

I hope this article on Kuala Lumpur to Makassar Sulawesi flights with Batik Air provided the information needed for anyone planning to do birdwatching in Sulawesi, Indonesia.
