KLCC Park Bird Watching

If you did not know, you can do bird watching in KLCC Park, and you will be surprised as several birds would be lifers for visiting birders to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. Overall, one needs to spend at least an hour or two for easy birding here.

This article is created to benefit birders or birdwatchers in Kuala Lumpur for work, have half a day off, and want to do some quick birdwatching here in the heart of KL City.

KLCC Park is located just by the Petronas Twin Towers in the heart of Kuala Lumpur and is probably one of the must-visit places for anyone coming to this part of the world.

It is large enough to walk around for an hour or two and spot some birds near the KLCC park, also known as Taman KLCc in Malay. Brazilian architect Roberto Burle Marx designed this beautiful man-made park.

He created combinations of manmade designs such as cement, water features, and natural features such as trees, shrubs, stones, and wood combined into one main area nestled within the busy city area of Kuala Lumpur.

The park also offers man-made ponds and well-manicured landscapes.

According to Wikipedia, a total of 1900 indigenous trees and 66 species of palms were planted in the KLCC Park to promote bio-diversity. The trees were deliberately selected to attract local and migratory birds.

The 50-acre park was also built in 1996 and is operated and managed by KLCC Properties, now one of the busiest places in KL city, especially on weekends.

For birdwatching here, I recommend you go early in the morning as that is the quiet time and the place gets busy from 10.00 AM onwards. But you can always go when your schedule suits you as there will be birds there.

What Birds to See at KLCC Park?

Because this is a man-made park, you will most likely see the common birds found all over the city. Namely garden birds and occasionally a few uncommon birds. Don’t expect to see rare or endemic birds like Pittas or Shamas.

During one of my birdwatching trips to KLCC park, I spotted the following birds in one hour of walking around the main park area closest to the Twin Towers and Mandarin Hotel;

  1. Black-naped Oriole
  2. Yellow-vented Bulbul
  3. Oriental Magpie Robin
  4. Eurasian Tree Sparrow
  5. Asian Glossy Starling
  6. Common Myna
  7. House Crow
  8. Ashy Tailorbird
  9. Rock Pigeons (Feral Pigeons)
  10. Zebra Dove
  11. Spotted Dove

Overall, there may be an uncommon passerby who may perch on one of the branches of the trees here, and you would be lucky to see it. However, I have heard that there have been sightings of some Egrets at the ponds around the park.

But do look up, as sometimes you may even encounter a raptor hovering in the sky above looking for prey. Most likely a Crested Serpent Eagle or Brahminy Kite.

How to go to KLCC Park?

For those staying out of the KLCC area, you can easily take the LRT train (Kelana Jaya Line – Red) and get off at the KLCC Station. It is only a 5-minute walk from the station to the park via the outside of the mall.

Alternatively, you can take a ride-hailing service or even self-drive here if you have a rented car. Parking is abundant as many places offer carparks at the surrounding buildings or KLCC.

The park has maps and other information available, so you will not get lost. However, there is no bird information, so you must identify the birds yourself. But I have already listed most of the birds that can be seen above.

Conclusion

And there are quite a number of facilities available around the KLCC park area, where there is a public toilet, a police beat base, a kids’ playground and even gazebos for you to take a break. The best part is if you are travelling with a family, everyone can visit here.

For Muslim birders, there is also a nearby mosque called Masjid Asy-Syakirin, which can be used for your prayers. There are no churches or other temples around the KLCC park area.

For those staying nearby the Petronas Twin Towers, you can easily walk here to do some Bird Watching in KLCC Park, especially in the mornings when there are fewer people.

    1. Hi Miss Lynne… I have the same question too.. all the time everyday got group of birds flying at top of KLCC tower antenna at night .. do U receive any answer for this ? If u received pls share with me .. TQ

      1. I’ve never personally seen any birds flying around at the twin towers at night, but then again, I typically avoid KLCC at night!
        Those birds could be:
        1) Migratory birds that were just passing through but became confused by the bright lights
        2) Common city birds (for example, pigeons, swifts, swallows) that are feeding on the insects attracted by the light
        3) Black-crowned Night-Herons?
I don’t know the actual answer, but maybe one of these days I’ll check it out…
